Women Are More Prone To Suffer From Low Sex Drive As Compared To Men
While low sex drive is thought to be more common in women, an increasing number of men are also coming across this type of sexual dysfunction. In some cases, an unhealthy lifestyle can also result in a low sex drive. In addition, fatigue after a long day at work, financial pressures, personal stress or even a physical ailment may put you off sex for a certain period of time. Similarly, unresolved personal issues within a relationship can sometimes escalate to a level where low sex drive becomes the norm.
Research has shown that where men are concerned low sex drive does not deter them from having regular, normal erections, even when they have no desire for sex. Similarly, women can reach an orgasm in spite of having no real sexual desire.
Possibilities of low sex drive
The possibilities are numerous but it is generally presumed that physical and psychological factors are the primary contributors of a low sex drive. In addition, alcoholism and binge drinking, smoking, abuse of drugs such as cocaine as well as certain prescription drugs like tranquilizers or antidepressants can also result in a low sex drive and sexual desire.
Certain medical conditions can also cause your sexual desire to wane. These include anaemia, fatigue, hypothyroidism, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and kidney disease. Diseases like Hyperprolactinaemia decreases libido and physical pleasure in women and sexual problems like premature ejaculation and impotence play a role in decreasing sex drive in men.
It is understood that postpartum depression often causes loss of libido, depending on varying degrees of severity; this is quite common after childbirth. In addition, most women are exceedingly preoccupied with their newborn, so much so that they are too tired to have sex.
In addition, breastfeeding is also known to release hormones that may suppress the sex drive, as is menopause. Medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, thrush, urinary tract infections, anaemia and hyperprolactinaemia may also decrease sex drive. Gynaecological problems like vaginismus and dyspareunia can also result in low sex drive or fear of sex.
Depression is a common psychological factor that contributes to a low sex drive. Other factors include anxiety, stress, sexual hang-ups, sexual identity crisis, past sexual abuse or rape, poor self-image or relationship issues with partner or husband. Moreover, issues such as lack of time, sexual incompatibility and lack of privacy can also affect sex drive in both sexes.
How to treat low sex drive?
If underlying physical, psychological or relationship problems exist, you must seek help from a doctor, therapist or counselor to help you resolve these deep-seated issues. Only through appropriately addressing your problem, can you get help to improve your sexual health.
Apart from prescription drugs, natural and holistic treatments which include the use of herbs like ginseng, horny goat weed, tribulus, muira puama, ashwagandha, eleutherococcus senticosis (Siberian ginseng), sabal serrulata, smilax ornata (sarsaparilla) and damiana, have been used for years to enhance love making, increase sex drive and promote sexual arousal. Herbs, used as sexual stimulants, gently help benefit the entire body.
Eating a well-balanced diet that include important nutrients like vitamin C and E, zinc and magnesium can also increase libido naturally. Other remedies include aromatherapy, warm bath with scented oils as well as exercises such as stretching, walking or yoga can also greatly improve sex drive.
You can also consult a doctor or a gynecologist if you suspect that your low sex drive stems from a physical condition. Sometimes, prescription drugs like Viagra or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can also help enhance sexual sensation and pleasure; however, these medications may have other side effects.
